Tönky Hönk‘s debut recording is colourful, quietly expressive, and eminently listenable, leaving listeners craving another helping. On The ËP, the duo spotlights three imaginative works exploring an expanded identity of pianism, making music with a grand piano (both in its conventional form and prepared with metal objects), Fender Rhodes pianos, a toy piano, a customized music box, and five carefully selected steel bowls.

Tönky Hönk is here to make music with whatever instruments they can get their hands on. Having independently earned reputations as accomplished solo artists and daring new music enthusiasts, Manitoban pianists Madeline Hildebrand and Everett Hopfner  are a groundbreaking keyboard duo exploring repertoire that defies expectations. At the core of each performance is enthusiasm, generosity and commitment to community. As collaborators, their projects have been supported by Nuit Blanche Winnipeg, Cluster New Music + Integrated Arts Festival, Pride Winnipeg, NUMUS (Waterloo, ON), Edmonton New Music, the Manitoba and Winnipeg Arts Councils. 

Tönky Hönk has held residencies dedicated to workshopping new music by established and emerging composers (New Music on the Point, Avaloch Farm Music Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador). During these residencies, they have encouraged composers to stretch the acoustic piano to its limits, and have premiered music for toy pianos, kick drums, cowbells, and microtonal keyboards. 

Together, Everett and Madeline are redefining what it means to be a pianist: with MIDI keyboards triggering a dazzling light show, filters creating an eerie new world of quarter tones, and melting into the mellow vintage sound of a Fender Rhodes, this duo is exploring the evolution of the piano… all with a bag of toys they are not afraid to use.
